Let's consider a recent scenario on USD/JPY. The macro backdrop pointed towards sustained USD strength: the Federal Reserve maintained a hawkish stance, emphasizing inflation control, while the Bank of Japan continued its ultra-loose monetary policy. This fundamental divergence established a clear directional bias for a long USD/JPY thesis. On the higher timeframes (Daily, 4-hour), price action confirmed an established bullish trend, characterized by consistent higher highs and higher lows. Our framework dictates that we seek to align with this dominant trend, looking for opportunities to buy pullbacks.

Specifically, we observed price pulling back into a key 4-hour demand zone, which also aligned with a previous structural break and the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement level from the most recent swing high. This confluence of factors suggested a high-probability area for buyers to step in. The critical element here is not just identifying a zone, but understanding its significance within the broader market structure and liquidity landscape.

Identifying the Opportunity: Liquidity & Confirmation

As price entered our identified demand zone, we zoomed into the lower timeframes (15-minute, 5-minute) for confirmation. The initial price action was choppy, indicative of absorption. Crucially, we witnessed a sweep of prior internal lows within the demand zone, effectively taking out early long liquidity and triggering stop losses. This liquidity grab often precedes a strong move in the opposite direction. Following this sweep, price then printed a clear 'change of character' (CHoCH) – a break of the most recent internal bearish structure, signaling a potential shift in short-term momentum. This structural break was followed by a clean retest of the newly formed demand block created by the CHoCH, offering a refined entry point.

Execution & Risk Management: The Live Trade

Our entry was placed on the retest of this 15-minute demand block, with a tight stop loss strategically positioned just below the liquidity sweep low, protecting against further downside and invalidating our structural thesis. The target was set at the previous 4-hour swing high, aiming for an R:R of approximately 1:3. Our risk per trade was strictly capped at 0.5% of the challenge account equity, aligning with our disciplined risk parameters. As price moved in our favor, we scaled out 50% of the position at the first significant resistance level (1:1 R:R) and moved our stop loss to breakeven, effectively creating a risk-free trade on the remaining position. The remaining 50% was allowed to run to the final target.
